Xavi Hernandez defends Lionel Messi from individual criticism
Xavier Hernandez Creus has leapt to the defence of Lionel Messi and described the forward as the best player in the world after he was labelled as being greedy.
The Barça playmaker does not agree with criticism that has been aimed at the Argentinian that he holds on to the ball too long and that his individualism is a good thing.
Diego Maradona stirred things up when he hit out at Messi for not being a team player and after the Spanish media joined in, Xavi felt moved to defend his team-mate.
“Leo is the best player in the world," he told reporters on Friday. "He has to be selfish in the area because that way he can make a difference.
"We are delighted to have him with us and that he is an individualist, always in the good sense of the word.”
Bojan Krkic has also been in the news after not being given much chance to impress under Pep Guardiola, but Xavi thinks that he is happy and is waiting for his opportunity,
“I think he’s fine, comfortable, settled and prepared. He’s got natural talent, but it is the manager who decides how much he plays. But he clearly has every faith in him," he continued.
Barcelona are under pressure to record their first league victory of the season this weekend at Sporting although Xavi thinks that there is no more pressure than if they were doing well.
“We’d like to be in a more comfortable position, but we’d be under pressure even if we were leaders” he explained. "Now we have to try to correct our errors and start winning in the League.
“There are good enough players in the squad to make up for the absences of the likes of Ronaldinho and Deco. We have other important footballers and we can’t lay the blame on the players that have gone.”
